My name is Misti Jones and I am a PR/Advertising major at Sam Houston State University.
I’ve long known my chosen profession and my jobs reflect it: marketing college events with media outreach and social media management as Public Relations/Promotions Assistant for the College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication; working at newspapers, in corporate settings, on broadcast media and in nonprofit settings.
Additionally, I’ve won multiple awards for writing and editing, am acting President of the Public Relations Student Society of America and am representing SHSU as an Orange Key Student Ambassador.
PR/Promotions Assistant, College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication
2013 - present
As Public Relations & Promotions Assistant, I am responsible for assisting the implementation of the College's public image campaign to increase visibility, presenting a positive brand of the College to targeted audiences and increasing performance/event attendance through social media, digital communications, promotions and graphic design work. I generate publicity for upcoming events by writing press releases and news stories, and by creating flyers, e-newsletters, e-blasts, videos and advertisements. I also manage our social media accounts, and I have created several interactive social media campaigns/contests which have increased our social media followers and engagement by more than 100%. I also promote our College at SHSU tailgates, promo tables and Saturdays@Sam. My job requires me to regularly use Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and Microsoft Office.
Communications/Copywriting Intern
June 2014 - August 2014
As the Communications Intern for the Creative Communications and Events Department, I was able to experience different aspects of the business and the department. My responsibilities included writing stories and blurbs for the IB’s “Current” magazine and internal communication (Intercom, iWeekly & iBuzz). I was also in charge of creating headlines and copy for Mopar, Honda and Durham Bulls advertisements as well as All Battery Center signage. I also blogged, crafted e-Commerce emails for upcoming sales promotions and wrote iWeekly updates for World Cup, Celebrate Freedom and Volunteer Month.
I was included in meetings to rename EGAD (Employee Gratitude and Appreciation Day), create an e-Business presentation for IB’s officers and develop a purpose statement for CCE. I sat in on PR conference calls, shadowed IB's PR agency (Tucker & Associates), created a PR calendar, assisted in the filming of a commercial, operated a teleprompter and crafted conflict resolution responses for e-Commerce.

Viewpoints Editor
2013 - 2014
As the Viewpoints Editor, I wrote, assigned and edited opinion stories for the The Houstonian twice weekly newspaper. I managed three staff reporters, received letters to the editor, brought in recurring columnists and contributing reporters, controlled "Word on the Street" segment, and published stories on The Houstonian "Viewpoints" page. I designed my page in Adobe InDesign every deadline night. I also acquired design skills by laying out the front page and the entire paper on numerous occasions. My position required me to speak to individuals outside of the office to obtain quotes, information and more. I wrote Op-Ed stories for my page, produced a weekly entertainment podcast, and published online stories twice a week.
